Western Oaks Dolphins Swim Team

Cherie Winand died on July 14, 2003 at the age of 13 years. She had been on the swim team for many years (from at least 5 or 6 years old). Cherie was always very helpful to the coaches. She got to practice early and helped with set-up and stayed late for take down too. She was a good swimmer and a good sport.

Cherie's death was a huge loss for all on the Swim Team. Swim Team families contributed funds for the bench and stones by the baby pool, and there is a plaque on the bench. The Cherie Winand Award was established the year following Cherie's death. The coaches choose a boy and a girl who exhibit the same sort of qualities Cherie had.

2009 was the first year of the Donna Shield’s Volunteer Award. Donna was lost to us in a car accident right before the holidays in 2007. She played an important role in the swim team by stepping up, volunteering and never complained. She was a giving and generous person and the team wanted to honor her memory in this special way. Each year the swim team board chooses a volunteer who exhibits Donna's volunteer spirit.
